  • Attend Council meetings to learn about priority issues/projects and observe what being on a council might be like. You can view the City's Council Calender here to see when the meeting schedule;
  • Look at the City of Kimberley’s key planning documents and reports. Please click here to access these documents;
  • Get to know key groups in the community to understand the diversity of interests in our area;
  • Research the internet for information about local governments and basic facts about the local government system in BC. 

The Province of British Columbia created a four part series to help potential local government candidates answer questions that they may have before making the final decision to run for elected office.

QUALIFICATIONS TO RUN FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT OFFICE

To qualify as a candidate for local government office, at the time of nomination, a person must meet the following criteria:

  • 18 years of age or older on general voting day
  • Canadian Citizen;
  • Resident of BC for at least 6 months immediately before the day nomination papers are filed; and
  • Not disqualified by the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election in British Columbia or from being nominated for, being elected to, or holding office.
