Curbside Recycling Coming to Kimberley

Curbside recycling collection trucks will roll through neighbourhoods later this summer with the launch of Kimberley’s Curbside Recycling Program. In partnership with Recycle BC, the City’s recycling program will collect from 3,122 single-family dwellings throughout Kimberley, while multi-unit dwellings will remain responsible for their own collection.

Recycling carts will be delivered to homes in early August with curbside recycling set to begin August 31st. Recycle BC uses a consistent material list across the province, meaning the same materials are accepted everywhere Recycle BC operates. Allowable materials will include packaging and printed paper including newspapers, boxboard packaging, cardboard, plastic bottles, jars and jugs, plastic or paper take-out cups, bowls and lids, and metal cans.  

Residents will still be required to bring glass, foam packaging, plastic and lined plastic bags, and hazardous materials to the recycling depot. Complete lists of accepted and unaccepted materials can be found on the City’s website at www.kimberley.ca/recycle.

“Kimberley is one of the few municipalities in British Columbia with no curbside recycling program as yet,” said Nik Morissette, Manager of Operations – Roads with the City of Kimberley. “Introducing this program is going to have major impacts on our environment. We look forward to being a part of the solution to divert waste from the landfill and help keep BC and the East Kootenays beautiful.”

This program is being financially supported by both Recycle BC and the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK). Recycle BC is a not-for-profit organization responsible for residential packaging and paper recycling across the province. Producers of packaging and paper products have responsibility for the financing and operation of the province-wide residential recycling system, helping to keep costs down for municipalities. Recycle BC manages this program on behalf of the producers. RDEK is supporting the costs of recycling carts.
