City of Kimberley Receives Columbia Basin Trust Community Outdoor Revitalization Grant
Residents should be on the lookout for some positive changes coming to the Platzl during the next year. The City has been awarded $88,890 from Columbia Basin Trust Community Outdoor Revitalization Grant Program. Through consultation with the Chamber of Commerce and residents, the City requested funds to support several upgrades and additions to the Platzl that would create an improved space for the community to gather.
One of the biggest changes to be implemented will be a revamped entrance walkway from the main parking lot to the Platzl. Increased lighting and improved façade and signage will welcome visitors and ensure they know how to access the area. Further upgrades include increased seating as well as improving safety and access for those with disabilities.
“This project will provide better access to the Platzl for the entire community, including those with varying levels of abilities. Funds received will support installation of more seating including picnic tables for those with disabilities. We will install a tri-level drinking water fountain and new solar-assisted e-charging stations will be installed for e-bikes and charging mobility devices,” says Chief Administrative Officer, Scott Sommerville. “We want to help create an inclusive space that is welcoming and encourages the community to celebrate and come together.”
An important part of this project is the Land and Building Owner Incentive Grants that will see more than $10,000 in matching grants awarded to successful Platzl business and property owners. Successful applicants can use the matching funds to complete façade updates or permanent landscaping improvements to revamp the character, accessibility and/or appearance of their building. The program application process will be announced soon.
Community Outdoor Revitalization Grants support Basin communities to create, restore or enhance welcoming, safe and vibrant outdoor multi-use community spaces that support community gathering and programming. Investing in these types of community spaces strengthens the social and cultural fabric of communities by enhancing community pride, supporting a culture of civic engagement and creating a draw for tourism marketing, and business retention and expansion.
